The encounter of two geniuses is the background for this CD. 1739 chamber lutenist Silvius Leopold Weiss visited Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig where they competed in friendly improvisation contests. Even though Bach probably played the harpsichord on this occasion, Johannes Pramsohler and Jadran Duncumb attempt a reconstruction of the encounter; besides the magnificent Suite in A Major, BWV 1025 – a joint work of both composers – the programme includes solo works for lute and the famous Partita in D Minor. Bach's private secretary wrote: “Something extra special is happening here.”
La rencontre de deux génies sert de trame à ce programme : en 1739, le luthiste à la cour royale de Dresde, Silvius Leopold Weiss, rendait visite à Johann Sebastian Bach à Leipzig. Bien qu’à cette occasion, Bach ait probablement occupé la place au clavecin, Johannes Pramsohler et Jadran Duncumb osent reconstituer cette rencontre : outre la grandiose Suite en la majeur, BWV 1025, une œuvre commune des deux compositeurs, on entend des œuvres pour luth seul ainsi que la célèbre Partita en ré mineur pour violon seul. Comme le rapportait le secrétaire privé de Bach à propos de cette rencontre : « Il est en train de se produire quelque chose de vraiment très subtil en musique. »
Die Begegnung zweier Genies als Hintergrund für ein CD-Programm: 1739 war der königliche Kammerlautenist Silvius Leopold Weiss bei Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig zu Besuch. Augenzeugen berichten von leidenschaftlichen Improvisations-Wettstreiten. Obwohl Bach bei dieser Gelegenheit wahrscheinlich am Cembalo saß, wagen Johannes Pramsohler und Jadran Duncumb den Versuch einer Rekonstruktion dieser Begegnung: neben der großartigen Suite in A-Dur, BWV 1025, einem Gemeinschaftswerk der beiden Komponisten, erklingen Solowerke für Laute und die berühmte d-Moll-Partita für Violine. Wie Bachs Privatsekretär zur Begegnung meinte: „Es passirt gerade etwas extra feines von Musik.“
